PERSONALITY AND HISTORY: Atthis grew from being a gawky, childish and graceless teenager studying under Sappho, with all the pettinesses that came of youth, into a proud and beautiful young woman who committed herself to Andromeda, regardless of Sappho's objections and, upon Sappho's exile to Sicily, also showed her innate tenderness as she missed and honoured her former teacher's name, in spite of Andromeda's schemes. Clinging to the brief years of freedom she could be allowed before her family expected her to marry for their prosperity and position, she patiently waited for Sappho to return to Lesbos.
